Uisge Beatha

On February 19, 2012, a gathering took place in St. John’s, NL that aimed to explore all things scotch. Uisge Beatha (gaelic for ‘water of life’) is a members only club that has a collective love of scotch combined with a limited ability to analyze that which makes each whisky truly unique. So, armed with our Glencairn glass from www.whiskyglass.ca:

and Michael Jackson’s seminal Malt Whisky Companion:

we proceeded to analyze the appearance, nose, and taste of the following offerings:

1. The Glenlivet 12

2. Glenmorangie 10 (The Original)

3. Mac Na Mara

4. The Balvenie DoubleWood

5. The Glenrothes 1998

6. Lagavulin 16

Repertoire Ideas

As we all get back into the swing of things, I am wondering what you think are the “must play” concert band pieces from the past few years. A few of my thoughts:

1. Rising Star (Samuel Hazo) – AMAZING Grade 1 piece using only the first 6 notes of the Bb scale.
2. Attack of the Garden Gnomes (Tim Loest) – A great piece for beginner band. With a title like that, how can it not be awesome?
3. Ecstatic Waters (Steven Bryant) – Destined to be on must play lists for a long time.
4. Prayer of a Distant Island (Suzuki) – A wonderful work that combines traditional band writing with movie scoring.

Thanks for stopping by….

It appears that people are actually stopping by for a brief visit. Thank you! That could also be my ego talking. The reality is probably that the hits to this site are from off-shore scammers trying to get me to buy the latest version of the Slap Chop.

Anyway, if you are stopping by, please leave a comment. I would love to get your thoughts on what you see and/or hear.

Cheers,

J
